In Sweden, safety is the top priority on the roads. That's why every aspiring driver must complete the two-part Risk Education (Riskutbildning) before taking the final driving test.
Risk 1 (Riskettan) - Theory
Risk 1 is a theoretical course that focuses on risky behaviors. It typically lasts about 3-4 hours and covers:
- Alcohol and Drugs: How substances affect your driving ability.
- Fatigue: The dangers of driving while tired.
- Distractions: Mobile phones, passengers, and other distractions.
- Risky Behaviors: Speeding and aggressive driving.
You don’t need to prepare much for this; just participate actively in the discussions.
Risk 2 (Risktvåan) - Practice
Commonly known as the "Slippery Road" (Halkbana) training, Risk 2 is a practical session.
- Duration: Usually 3-4 hours.
- Content: You will drive on a special slippery track to experience loss of control.
- Goal: To understand how speed and road conditions affect the car and to learn the limitations of both the vehicle and the driver. It is not a course on how to drift, but rather how to avoid getting into dangerous situations.
When should I do them?
- You can take Risk 1 early in your training.
- It is recommended to take Risk 2 towards the end of your training, when you can maneuver the car well enough to focus on the safety aspects.
Both courses are valid for 5 years. Remember to bring valid ID to both sessions!
