Driving in Sweden means driving in winter conditions for nearly half the year. Darkness, snow, and ice present unique challenges.
Winter Tires (Vinterdäck)
It is law to use winter tires when winter road conditions prevail between December 1st and March 31st.
- Studded (Dubbdäck): Best for ice, but banned on some city streets.
- Friction (Dubbfria): Good for snow and cold asphalt.
Driving Techniques
- Keep Distance: Stopping distance can increase by 10x on ice. Increase your following distance significantly.
- Be Gentle: Avoid sudden braking, steering, or acceleration. Smooth inputs keep the car stable.
- Black Ice (Svarta halkan): This invisible ice forms on bridges and in shaded areas. If the road looks wet but the temperature is near zero, assume it is ice.
- Stuck in Snow? Don't spin the wheels hard. Rock the car back and forth gently to gain traction.
Preparation
- Scraper & Brush: Always have an ice scraper and snow brush in the car. It is illegal to drive with a snow-covered car ("igloo driving").
- Washer Fluid: Use freeze-resistant washer fluid (glykol).
- Warm Clothes: Keep a blanket or warm jacket in the car in case you get stranded.
